For several years, the artist studied classical painting abroad, improving his writing skills. Creating copies from the paintings of the great Raphael, he managed to achieve a high level of drawing. By the time of painting, Losenko had thoroughly studied full-scale school, so he proceeded to depict a man in full growth with great knowledge of the matter.
The painting "Abel", like the other painter's work - "Cain", has no context. Biblical names only designated sitters who posed for the canvas, but they ideally fit the plot of the paintings. Interestingly, the entrenched name appeared later, the author himself did not name his work.
The artist set himself the task of showing a strong man at the time of suffering, which he did very well.
The space of the picture is perfectly organized: nudity, skillfully draped with red cloth, is located strictly on the diagonal. Each anatomical detail is carefully written out, proportions are perfectly observed.
The figure of Abel, who fell on his back, is full of pain and despair. A cramp reduced the muscles, an internal movement in the pale body is clearly felt. Eyes closed, open mouths let out a dying moan of farewell. The hand reaches with the last effort to the place of the mortal blow.
The gloomy general tone of the work is in tune with the current event. The red spot around the lying Abel attracts attention: the viewer gradually ceases to see a piece of fabric in the picture, perceiving it as a spreading bloody stain.
